There was a time when flying was only for the elite. Thankfully, this is no more the case, though generally flights are still expensive and out of reach for a good number of people. Due to the globalization of the market, it is possible today to find low cost flights to anywhere in the world, provided you are willing to look for these.

What are the advantages of budget flights?

Besides the fact that it gives value for money, you would find many more advantages of low cost flights:

1. It saves you precious time – this is one advantage that many find irresistible. Time is a very precious commodity today, and if you can fly for just a small increase in price compared to a train journey, then it is definately worthwhile.

When Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes launched a no-frills, low-cost airline in 2002 with only two planes, few people realised the effect it would have. From only four routes, Air Asia set off a low-fare revolution that changed the face of the airline industry in the region. It is a stunning success story and now has 35 aircraft and flies millions of passengers across south-east Asia every year.

If you want to book a ticket with a low-cost carrier, the first trick is to find out which airlines serve your intended route. With lower advertising budgets than traditional airlines, this is often quite difficult. For your convenience we have listed the major budget carriers serving the two prime destinations – Singapore, Thailand.

Singapore:

The major budget carriers operating to and from this island state are JetStar Asia and Tiger Airways. JetStar Asia covers most major destinations in south-east asia, as well as Bangalore and Kolkata in India.

Tiger Airways covers Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, Macau, and Padang in Indonesia. It is the only budget carrier direct to Vietnam from Singapore and the only budget choice to Australia, flying from Singapore to Darwin).

Thailand:

The three main operators in Thailand are Thai Air Asia, Nok Air and One-Two-Go. Thai AirAsia was launched in January 2004. Based primarily in Bangkok, the airline serves Thailand’s major domestic destinations, as well as Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu), Singapore, Macau, Xiamen and Hanoi.

Nok Air, a subsidiary of Thai Airways International, flies from Bangkok to domestic destinations such as Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Udon Thani. One-Two-Go covers the major domestic routes within Thailand with fixed-price tickets.

Eurostar trains operate on a high speed line between London and mainland Europe, stopping at destination in France and Belgium. Figures for the beginning of the year indicate that more and more travellers are becoming attracted to this mode of transport with figures up twenty five percent.

A major advantage of travelling with Eurostar is that they run on time, with punctuality figure reaching almost ninety-four percent. A report in the Telegraph newspaper earlier this month demonstrates that this is nowhere near the case with British airways, who ranked 22nd out of 29 as one of Europe’s poorest performers for punctual arrivals and even worse at 23rd for departures. This is not the story of every airline and Flybe has outperformed many of it rivals with a punctuality record on its London to Belfast route, but the figure of eight seven percent is still a long way short of Eurostar’s record.

London St Pancras International is a very convenient station to arrive at with no less than six underground links and seven mainline links connecting directly to it. Ebbsfleet International is situated just off junction two of the M25 and therefore convenient for those living in South East England, and there is also a free to this station and Ashford International on connecting Fasttrack buses and South Eastern trains. However it is not always as easy to find an airport close to home that is flying to the destination of your choice.

Booking is fast and easy with Eurostar who initiated Railteam, which is a joint venture between Europe’s top high-speed train operators, and Railteam network is fast expanding which can only lead further improvements.

Today, many people have concerns for the well-being of the environment and many are starting to base their travel choices based on environmental concern. Additionally the new green rules, which demand planes to burn less fuel, are being viewed suspiciously because they might cause planes to crash.

All in all, Eurostar has a number of clear advantages over travel by low cost airlines, especially having partnered with Friends of the Earth to work together on the development of the Friends of the Earths, The Big Ask campaign and Eurostar’s, Tread Lightly scheme.

Eurostar have made good progress in their initiative to reduce its environmental impact and ticket sales increased twenty five percent in the first three month period. An independent survey by “YouGov” shows that our views about travelling are changing, that we are starting to take action and expect others to do so as well.
